NOTICE:

These rankings were put out later to account for the action of the Matteo Pellicone. It would be Anti-Italian discrimination if I did not include the results from them.

Removals due to inactivity:

2018 65 KG world champion #3 (65) Takuto Otoguro (JPN) has been removed from the 65 KG and pound for pound rankings due to inactivity, his last competition was the the 2020 Asian championships in February where he beat #6 Bajrang Punia (IND) 10-2 in the finals. 2019 Russian nationals champion Vladislav Baitsaev, (RUS), ranked seventh at 97 KG in February, has been removed from the rankings due to inactivity, as his last competition was in January 2020, where he won the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix. #15 (92) Hossein Nedad Jalili (IRI) and #16 (92) Hossein Shahbazigazvar (IRI) have been removed from the 92 KG rankings due to inactivity as neither has competed since January 2020 where Jalili took bronze at the Takhti Cup and Shahbazigazvar was the runner-up to Javad Ebrahimi (IRI). #5 (92) Javad Ebrahimi (IRI) has been removed from the rankings due to inactivity as his last competition was in February 2020 where he took gold at the Asian championships. #7 (57) Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez (CUB) was removed due to inactivity since he has not competed since January 2021 when he lost 8-4 to #6 Reineri Andreu Ortega (CUB) in the DRL.  2020 European championships runner-up #8 (70) Agaguseynov Mustafaev (AZE) has been removed from the 70 KG rankings due to inactivity, having not competed since February of 2020.

*OUWCMT is the acronym used for Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestler and Coaches Memorial Tournament

57 KG

Abubakr Mutaliev (RUS) won the North Caucasus Federal District tournament over 6-1 over 2019 Russian nationals bronze medalist Khasanhussein Badrudinov (RUS). Taking bronze at the event was Ali Aliyev (RUS) with a 3-0 win over Magomed Gadzhiev (RUS) and Ibragim Khasiev (RUS) by a 12-2 win over Murat Borokov (RUS). #14 Thomas Gilman (USA) got removed from the rankings due to two things; first getting pinned by Zach Sanders, and second was the huge surge of Uzbek talent into the rankings after their strong showing in Ukraine that booted out the Azeri contingent who compromised much of Gilman’s recent resume. #13 Seth Gross (USA) was removed from the rankings as well, being that his inclusion to the rankings was based off wins over a then unranked Nick Suriano at the 2019 Dave Schultz Memorial Invitational and beating Gilman at the WRTC in January.

The Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers and Coaches Memorial Tournament (OUWCMT) was the cause of most of the shakeup for this month across 57 and 61. 2018 Junior Asian champion Gulomjon Abdullaev (UZB) won the tournament 7-1 over 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games bronze medalist Nodiryun Safarov (UZB). Finishing with bronze was Bekbolot Myrzanazar (KGZ) 14-5 over Roberti Dingashvili (GEO) and Makhmudjon Shavkatov (UZB) 8-6 over Taras Markovych (UKR).  Before getting too deep into the weeds of Uzbekistan’s performance, it’s best to address the performance of the 61 KG athletes, #9 (61) Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov (KGZ) and #12 (61) Georgi Vangelov (BUL), who competed. Zholdoshbekov was upset by Belarusian national runner-up Dzmitry Shamela (BLR) 10-8 in qualification round and Vangelov was eliminated in the quarterfinals 5-2 by Bekbolot Myrzanazar (KGZ). Both Zholdoshebkov and Vangelov have been removed from the 61 KG rankings for their losses at the OUWCMT.

Much of the change at 57 came out of losses to Azerbaijan so the highest ranked one was in the round of 16 for Henri Deglane runner-up #12 Islam Bazarganov (AZE) losing 14-12 to Roberti Dingashvili (GEO). Then in the same round, 2019 European Games champion #17 Makhir Amiraslanov (AZE) loses 3-1 to 2018 Asian championships runner-up Makhmudjon Shavkatov (UZB). To wrap up the Azeri upsets, 3x Russian nationals bronze medalist Aryan Tyutrin (BLR) beat #15 Afghan Khasalov (AZE) 2-1 in the qualification round.

Knowing the upsets of both the 61 KG guys and all the Azeri losses, now let’s piece it all together. In the quarters, Safarov techs Dingashvili 10-0, Gulomjon Abdullaev beats Tyutrin 6-3, Myrzanazar beats Vangelov 5-2 and Shavkatov beats Cracuin 4-0. For the semis, Safarov beats Myrzanazar 8-1 and Abdullaev beats Shavkatov 3-1. The final important result to remember is that 2019 European Games bronze medalist Taras Markovich (UKR) beat Aryan Tyutrin (BLR) 5-1 in the second round of repechage.

So in the aftermath of the results of the OUWCMT, Gulomjon Abdullaev (UZB) takes the #9 spot for winning gold and Nodiryun Safarov (UZB) is at #10 for his runner-up finish. Bekbolot Myrzanazar (KGZ) is at #11 for taking bronze and Makhmudjon Shavkatov (UZB) takes #12 for winning bronze over Taras Markovich (UKR) returns to the rankings at #13 for beating #14 Aryan Tyutrin (BLR). #10 Horst Lehr (GER) got moved down seven spots due to inactivity and his wins over Georgi Vangelov, Taras Markovich, and Afghan Khasalov not aging as well because at the time they weren’t as highly ranked coupled with the standout Uzbek performances makes it so that he doesn’t have the strongest argument to keep holding onto a top 10 spot. #16 Giorgi Edisherashvili (AZE), #14 Thomas Gilman (USA), #17 Makhir Amiraslanov (AZE), #13 Seth Gross, and #18 Joe Colon (USA) have been removed from the rankings.

The Matteo Pellicone was competed under a round robin format and the most notable result was two time world medalist Nurislam Sanayev (KAZ) taking gold off the strength off two wins over Henri Deglane champion #15 Nick Suriano (USA). For his title at the Matteo Pellicone along with his past resume, Sanayev takes the #8 spot. Finishing with bronze was Givi Davidovi (ITA) by 10-0 decision over Ali Aburumaila (PLE). #3 Suleyman Atli (TUR) was removed from the rankings as he competed up at 61 KG for his second time since the 2020 Ziolkowski. Atli finished as the runner-up to 2019 U-23 world runner-up Adlan Askarov (KAZ).

61 KG

#9 Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov (KGZ) and #12 Georgi Vangelov (BUL) have been removed from the rankings due to losses down at 57 KG at the OUWCMT. Zholdoshbekov lost in the opening round 10-8 to the Belarusian national runner-up Dzmitry Shamela (BLR) and Vangelov lost 5-2 in the quarterfinals to Bekbolot Myrzanazar (KGZ).

Winning the OUWCMT was #8 Akhmednabi Gvarzatilov (AZE) 7-2 over 2019 Junior world runner-up Andrii Dzhelep (UKR). Bronze medalists were Arman Eloyan (FRA) 8-4 over Tornike Katamidze (GEO) and Ikromzhon Khadzhimuradov (KGZ)  by pin over Kamil Kerymov (UKR). Important results from the OUWCMT were Viktor Lyzen (GER) beating #19 Razmik Papikyan (ARM), Andrii Dzhelep (UKR) beating #16 Recep Topal (TUR) and Cabbar Duyum (TUR) beating #16 Recep Topal (TUR) in the first round or repechage. What all this does, is that Dzhelep gets ranked at #15, Arman Eloyan (FRA) gets ranked at #18 for beating Tornike Katamadze (GEO) who beat Cabbar Duyum (TUR) who beat #16 Recep Topal (TUR).

Winning the North Caucasus Federal District Tournament was 2019 Russian nationals bronze medalist Dinislam Takhtarov (RUS) 2-2 over Muslim Mektikhanov (RUS). Mekhtikhanov notched a big upset win earlier in the tournament over two time Russian nationals bronze medalist Zelimkhan Abakarov (RUS). Bronze medalists at the NCFD were Zelimkhan Abakarov (RUS) 12-2 over Islam Maltsagov (RUS) and Cherman Tavitov (RUS) over Tamerlan Karaev (RUS) 13-6. The results of the NCFD have Takhtarov return to the rankings at #9, Mekhtikhanov make his debut at #10, and Abakarov slot in at #11 after having been a fixture of the top 5 much of 2019 and being the #1 ranked wrestler in the world going into Russian nationals that year.

To make the finals, Rahimzade notched strong wins over 2015 61 KG world bronze medalist Vasyl Shuptar (UKR) 5-4 and 2017 U-23 European championships bronze Shota Phartenadze (GEO).
